Like many other School Counselors, I get called a "Guidance Counselor" a lot, and every time I cringe like someone has just called me a bad name. After reading many posts on this topic, I realized I am not the only one!!!
The phrase "guidance counselor" is a very out-dated term that does not describe Professional School Counselors today. Counseling is a field that has made a big transformation in the past few years, including the growth from Guidance Counselors to School Counselors. Part of a counselor's job is advocacy for our programs, our children and for the field of counseling in general. I encourage all counselors to educate our kids, our staff, our faculty, our administration and our communities on our correct job descriptions and terminology.
