Classroom Guidance Lessons
I love getting to spend time in classrooms teaching whole
group lessons. It gives me a chance to see all my students. I am responsible
for 32 classes. Personally, I have one scheduled lesson every month with all my
classes (JK-6th grade). However, my teachers ask me to come in to teach additional lessons
based on needs they are having in their particular class. Therefore, I might see several of my classes twice a month. It is important for school counselors to advocate for our time.
Classroom lessons are very important for prevention and building rapport.
However, we should not spend all of our time teaching guidance
lessons. It is important to balance your time.

Classroom Expectations
Counselors are not disciplinarians, yet they put us in a classroom with tons of students and want us to keep control. I came up with these expectations that I go over with every class, every class period. We talk about what each expectation looks like before ever starting class. If I see a student not meeting one of the expectations, I review them. If it continues, he or she does not participate in the fun activity at the end of the lesson. High expectations with engaging activities will help counselors to stay far away from discipline.
