Small Group Counseling
As a school counselor, I love groups!
It is such a great way to reach more students.
I usually have between 6 and 10 students in each group.
I like to conduct topically groups. I always get parent permission
before starting sessions. I generally have the same rules;
however I let the students help me develop the group
rules. I always give my group members
a survey to end the last session.

Group Expectations
Every group starts with brainstorming group expectations. The group members think of the rules together. I lead the rules discussion to make sure it goes in the right direction. I bring these rules to the next group session to check to see if everyone agrees on the rules. Expectations are a must. It is important for the members to be aware of what are appropriate behaviors for the group.
Group Plans:
Group Regulars
Thumb Balls
Metaphor Basket
I love this idea from Marissa at Elementary School Counseling. My groups have loved this activity. You add several items to a basket. The students pick on idea and tell how it relates to the topic being discussed. This starts great conversations. |
A Star & A Wish
This is a warm-up activity. Each group member says a star (something good that he or she has experienced) and a wish (something he or she wishes they could changes). This is a great way to start a group meeting.
Videos
Here are some videos that I use during classroom, group and individual counseling to help my kids.
