This year I have learned that other educators do not understand the ins and outs of a counselor's job. It makes sense that most teachers and administrators do not completely understand because they have not had the intense training school counselors have had in our graduate programs. Most other educators try to understand our job based on their own experience in school or what they see. Those two things do not help them understand because counseling has changed drastically in the past few years and they do not get to see most of what we really do. So much of a counselor's job is confidential, so the teachers are not going to always see proof of what we are spending our time doing. It is SO important that counselors advocate for our program and our time. Here are two great articles that address these issues. Both are incredible reads. I highly recommend them. Enjoy!
